COLLEGE STATION, Aug. 2, 2010 – An endowed Texas A&M University scholarship funded by the Class of ‘94 will help a student starting this fall. Class agents Jodi Schlather, Chad T. King, Heather Eden and Michael D. Crain said their class opted to use money raised with their Ring Dance and other student fundraisers to help future generations of Aggies with education expenses. Hundreds of Class of ‘94 Aggies contributed to the scholarship, which was funded with a gift of $27,500.

“We love A&M and wanted to make it more affordable for someone else to fall in love with it as well,” Schlather said. “We wanted to keep the spirit of Aggieland alive, and one way to do that is through a scholarship.”

King recalled that scholarships helped many in their class attend school, so “it seems only natural that the Class of ‘94 should fund a scholarship. Texas A&M University has made an indelible impression on each Aggie. We are forever grateful for the strong academic education, the fantastic leadership opportunities, the friendships and connections forged, and of course, the indescribable Aggie spirit that helped shape each member of the Class of ‘94. We are hopeful our scholarship assists someone else.”

The economy also figured into their decision, Eden said. “It’s harder to go to college today. Tuition has gone up. This scholarship should help with books and make a dent in expenses. Every little bit helps.”
The Class of ‘94 established the scholarship with a gift to the Texas A&M Foundation, which raises private funds to benefit Texas A&M academics. The Foundation is raising $300 million for Aggie scholarships and fellowships through its multiyear “Operation Spirit and Mind” initiative. Since Jan. 1, 2007,
“Operation Spirit and Mind” has raised more than $205 million.

The Class of 1994 Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to Aggies on the basis of their academic achievement and extracurricular activities for one year; recipients may reapply to receive it again. Preference will be given to applicants who are related to a member of the Class of ‘94 and to relatives of members of other classes of the 1990s.

Eden encourages other Aggies to give similar scholarships. “It’s an easy process. If you don’t have the money upfront, there are many ways to do it while still raising funds. You can pay it out over a few years. An endowed scholarship like ours perpetuates the spirit of Aggieland because it will still be here long after we’re gone.”

The class of ‘94 gift also provided funds for the sculpture of entwined Aggie rings in front of the Clayton W. Williams Jr. Alumni Center on campus and an Aggie ring scholarship through The Association of Former Students.
