We often recommend that students search for scholarships outside of those awarded by the university to help finance the cost of education. Many state and national organizations and corporations have funds available to students who meet their criteria. At the same time, we also warn students to watch for scholarship scams. According to finaid.org, several hundred thousand students and parents are defrauded out of more than $100 million annually. Below are some tips on how to avoid being scammed.
• Never pay a fee to perform a scholarship search. There are many free scholarships search engines available online. For a list, check out the Outside Scholarship section of our website.
• Never send money upfront to apply for a scholarship, even if a scholarship is supposedly “guaranteed or your money back.” Money isn’t free if you have to pay to get it.
• Be suspicious of any organization that tells you that you have won a scholarship that you never applied for and now you must pay a fee to redeem it.
• Watch for scholarships that claim anyone is eligible. All scholarship sponsors are looking for students who best meet certain criteria, whatever that may be.
• You must do the leg work involved in searching for scholarships. Do not believe claims that a service will apply to scholarships for you.
• Never give out personal information such as your social security number to an organization that is unfamiliar to you.
• If in doubt, check with your financial aid counselor. We can help you verify if a foundation is legitimate.

COLLEGE STATION, Aug. 2, 2010 – An endowed Texas A&M University scholarship funded by the Class of ‘94 will help a student starting this fall. Class agents Jodi Schlather, Chad T. King, Heather Eden and Michael D. Crain said their class opted to use money raised with their Ring Dance and other student fundraisers to help future generations of Aggies with education expenses. Hundreds of Class of ‘94 Aggies contributed to the scholarship, which was funded with a gift of $27,500.
“We love A&M and wanted to make it more affordable for someone else to fall in love with it as well,” Schlather said. “We wanted to keep the spirit of Aggieland alive, and one way to do that is through a scholarship.”
King recalled that scholarships helped many in their class attend school, so “it seems only natural that the Class of ‘94 should fund a scholarship. Texas A&M University has made an indelible impression on each Aggie. We are forever grateful for the strong academic education, the fantastic leadership opportunities, the

ST. LOUIS – Megan Wood of Washington, Mo., and Jimmy Myers of Manchester, Mo., are the recipients of the St. Louis Sports Commission Associates’ 2010 Sportsmanship Scholarship. Each student is receiving a $2,500 award to apply to higher education expenses.
The Sportsmanship Scholarship is presented annually to graduating high school seniors from the St. Louis metro area who consistently demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship in athletic competition. Created by the Sports Commission Associates – the Sports Commission’s young professionals group – the scholarship is part of the organization’s ongoing Sportsmanship Initiative and efforts to promote sportsmanship in the community. The Associates raise funds for the scholarship and select its recipients.
A 2010 graduate of Washington High School, Megan Wood is enrolled at the University of Arkansas where she plans to study pre-medicine. In high school, she was a member of the varsity cross country, basketball, soccer, and track and field teams. She earned numerous academic and athletic honors – yet her scholarship recommendations emphasized that sportsmanship is one of Megan’s greatest strengths. That quality was highlighted during a cross country event this past school year. As Megan passed a competitor in the final half-mile of a race, she told the athlete to run with her, push on and “you can do it.” The competing runner finished ahead of Megan, yet Megan celebrated her achievement, congratulating her on a terrific race. The competitor’s father witnessed the exchange and was so moved that he wrote a letter to Washington’s athletic director praising Megan.
In her scholarship essay, Megan wrote: “Being an athlete is the easy part of any sport but having good sportsmanship takes heart and a strong character. I commend those who have the audacity to encourage an opponent, because they do it out of the kindness in their heart, never for glory. In my book, sports are played not for winning – that only lasts a second; but for playing fair, having fun, and giving back, because a kind, encouraging word or deed can make all the difference in living life to its fullest.”
Jimmy Myers graduated in May from Westminster Christian Academy. He will attend Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga., where he anticipates studying philosophy. At Westminster, he was a four-year letterman on the varsity tennis team and served as captain during his junior and senior seasons. His coach, Nathan Talley, said that not only did Jimmy play No. 1 for the Westminster team and play amazing tennis all season, “he did so with an attitude of grace, humility and kindness.”
It’s not unusual for Jimmy to defeat an opponent soundly yet walk off the court with him, asking a question about the player’s school or sharing a laugh. This past season, Jimmy encouraged his teammates to go beyond

Bahrain is the smallest of the Gulf States but financially and politically, it wields a lot of influence in the area. Like all other Gulf States, it is also in an aggressively developmental stage and has a lot of job opportunities for foreign workers but not on a permanent basis. Bahrain does not encourage foreigners to settle down permanently. It encourages temporary employment for foreign workers. There are a lot of job opportunities in all upcoming sectors such as construction, banking, oil and gas and teaching. Thus, for those looking to work in Bahrain, it is good to have a beforehand knowledge of the area, the living style here, the culture and of course the ample job opportunities that the place has to offer.
As mentioned earlier, foreign workers aren’t mostly allowed to settle down permanently here, but it does not mean that they are treated lousily. Expatriates are meted out a fair treatment but in a controlled manner. They are appreciated for their contribution, paid well and at the end of their stint, thanked for what they did. The main reason behind this is that the government is trying to make the region self-sufficient. It is putting in all efforts to ensure jobs and employment for its own young people. The authorities are making a lot of investment in education and social welfare and hopes that the local population will become sufficient in terms of workforce in the years to come. Youth are also inclined towards education and many leave for foreign universities to attain education.
Currently, foreign workers are required in large numbers and the demand would be there for at least another two to three decades. However, with the changing face of the region, the number of foreign workers and the type of skill requirements will undergo a change. For instance, currently there are a lot of infrastructure projects in full swing in Bahrain, owing to the construction of new roads, airports, ports etc. However, once these projects are over, the demand for manual workers in this industry will climb down. Apart from the infrastructure projects, the commercial development has also led to many building and construction programmes. Thus, construction workers are in demand there.
Bahrain’s economy is a fast growing one. Many sectors are coming up and there is huge demand for professionally trained workforce. People with managerial, professional and technological experience are and

People with managerial, professional and technological experience are and
Because the majority of scholarships require applicants to write at least one essay, it’s very important that the essay you write speaks to the scholarship judges. Not only must you meet their specific criteria, but you must also make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors.
Additionally, you need to make sure the quality of your essay is up to par with their requirements, which may seem very intimidating. Many students struggle with the writing process to begin with, and having to craft a well-written essay on another topic may seem like too much work to bother with.
However, if you are serious about obtaining scholarship money for college, then you need to prepare for the fact that you will have to write an essay or two for most of the scholarships you apply for. While many scholarships have writing prompts you are expected to answer in your essay, the primary goal for judges is to gain an understanding of you who are as a person – your beliefs and ideas should show through when you’re writing the essay.
Starting the Essay
Unfortunately, the beginning of your essay is oftentimes the hardest part. How do you begin? Well, there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind when you’re starting your essay.
Understand the Purpose
First and foremost, you must gain an understanding of why you are writing this essay. What reason could the judges have had for picking their particular question to base your essay on? Analyze the writing prompt. Figure out why you are writing what you’re writing. You can also write down the essay question and figure out how many parts the question has, and what order you need to structure your essay in according to the prompt.
You can also figure out if the essay question requires any research beforehand, or whether the question can be answered through your life experiences alone. Additionally, because the ultimate goal behind any

Recession has affected the Global economy in various ways and the Government of most countries in the world are taking measures to prevent the recession from becoming worse. Recession has become a very popular discussed topic and everybody feels the pinch of the recession in some format . Recession is a decline in the Gross domestic Product or GDP.
Inflation contributes mainly to the recession . When Cost of goods increases, people cut down their expenditure resulting in a fall in the demand for goods and services. And naturally GDP declines. Another cause of recession is said to be decrease in capital investment. Usually Government tries to solve the crisis by increasing money supply and reducing taxes.
The recession has created unemployment crisis all over the world . So many people have lost their jobs and houses too because of increased mortgage rates; they are unable to pay back the loan without an income. The rising unemployment caused sufferings to many families. This has a knock on effect almost everyplace. Families can be torn apart, it results in crime, addiction to alchol, domestic violence, and basically a whole host of other bad effects, all resulting from the build up of bad debt from loss of earnings and income. People need to make money to survive.
Back in 2008 around 80,000 lost jobs in the month of March alone. Most of the loss of jobs was in the construction industries, auto industries and financial service firms. Banks suffered a lot during this recession. Almost 140 banks were closed down in US between January 2009 and January 2010. So, you can imagine

Livestock – Epidemio - Surveillance Project Southern Sub – Project (Southern Sudan)
Baseline survey to map the extent of the expansion of East Coat Fever in South Sudan
Terms of Reference
Introduction
Veterinaires Sans Frontieres Belgium (VSF-Belgium) is an international non-governmental organization whose vision is to improve the welfare of vulnerable populations in developing countries, through improving animal health and production.
We have been a key player in the livestock sector in Southern Sudan since 1995 with a major role in the establishment of a community based animal health delivery system.
Since 2007 VSF Belgium has been involved directly in supporting the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries (MARF) in the establishment of an effective and efficient disease surveillance system in South Sudan.
This is under Livestock Epidemio-surveillance Southern subproject (LESP) through a grant from the European Community (EC), a parallel project is being implemented in northern Sudan.
The overall objective of the project is long-term reduction of poverty of those involved in livestock farming.
The specific objectives are:
• Completion of the rinderpest eradication pathway in Southern Sudan completed by 2008.
• Establishment of an effective and sustainable epidemio-surveillance system (ESS) owned and supported by the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) in order to support timely and effectively livestock disease control
• Ensure that the GoSS Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries (MARF) has an informed and fully-costed strategy addressing main animal health issues affecting Southern Sudan
The target groups for the project are the livestock owners of Southern Sudan, Community-based Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), Animal Health Auxiliaries, (AHAs), public and private veterinarians, Southern Sudan State Ministries of Agriculture and Animal Resources and Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries (MARF) Directorate of Veterinary Services.
Consultancy summary
In the past three years the project had its focus on addressing the completion of rinderpest eradication pathway as recommended by the World Animal Health Organization (OIE), as well as strengthening the disease surveillance capacity of the government of South Sudan specifically targeting priority and emerging livestock diseases in South Sudan.
However East Coast Fever (ECF) which was traditionally confined to the Equatoria Region of South Sudan seems to have spilled over to the neighboring states of Jonglei and Lakes, and is already causing alarm with a considerable loss among the native naïve livestock population.
Due to this threat the disease has become a top priority for the affected communities and the government.
Given the above, VSF-Belgium is seeking to engage one or more experts to map the distribution of ECF and

Country: Uganda
Location: Matheniko County, Moroto District, Karamoja Region
Project to be evaluated: “Karamoja Livestock Development Project Phase I”
I. Background
The Karamoja ‘cluster’ is a term used to describe the pastoral and agro-pastoral ethnic groups in an area comprising north-eastern Uganda, north-western Kenya, southern Sudan and south-western Ethiopia, most of whom share a common language, culture and land area.
The communities that constitute the Karamoja cluster include: Turkana, Matheniko, Bokora, Pian, Dodoth, Nyangatom, Didinga, Merille, Toposa, Jie, Tepeth, Acholi, Labwor and Upe.
In Uganda, Karamoja region covers 27,200 Km2 semi-arid plain, with an average rainfall of 500-700 mm per annum, variable in space and time. The environment is classified as in disequilibrium, where vegetation in areas not receiving rain for two or more years is able to regenerate rapidly when it receives adequate moisture.
There is a limited amount of acacia / commiphora forest in the higher ground to the east of Moroto, which is the Regional Headquarters, but the vast majority of the district can be classified as semi-arid savannah covered with seasonal grasses, thorny plants, and occasional small trees
The Karamoja region is characterized by a combination of acute poverty, vulnerability to drought, poor infrastructure, basic social services delivery, limited marketing opportunities, especially for livestock, natural resource degradation, social and cultural marginalization, long-standing dependency on external aid and most importantly, chronic insecurity.
The region is the least socially and economically developed in Uganda, even among the generally poor parts of Northern Uganda as a whole.
Due to the aridity, extensive livestock keeping is the principal economic activity within the district. Livestock are kept primarily to sustain livelihoods through milk, meat and barter; the sale of livestock is only of secondary importance.
The livestock keeping system, which is exceptionally well adapted to the disequilibrium environment, is hindered primarily by the chronic insecurity (which has its basis in a tradition of cattle rustling) of the area, but also by poor access to water in the dry season, poor quality of available forage, high incidence of contagious diseases and limited access to veterinary services.
Whereas the prevalence of diseases, poor access to water and poor quality of the available forage limit the possibilities for breed improvement, the conflict provides an active disincentive for breed improvement as families do not want to draw attention to their herds.
Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (VSF) Belgium, is an international non-governmental organization with a mission to improve the welfare of vulnerable populations in developing countries, through improving animal health and production.
VSF-Belgium is officially registered as an NGO with the Belgian Government and operates in several African countries. The Karamoja Livestock Development Project (KLDP) focuses on addressing insecurity and inadequate access to grazing and water for optimal animal health and production..
II. Objective
The overall objective of this mid-term evaluation is to assess and document the benefits and impact of the Karamoja Livestock Development Project on the social and economic status, welfare and livelihoods of the intended direct and indirect project beneficiaries.
This will involve assessing and documenting the project’s contribution to improving the livelihoods of the direct and indirect project beneficiaries.
The evaluation will include identifying the impact, changes, timeliness, coverage, appropriateness and connectedness of the project, highlighting key lessons learned in the current phase and recommendations for improving the future structuring of interventions.
III. Scope and focus
The broad terms of reference include the following:
• Measure the extent to which the programme’s objectives to improve the social and economic status of households in the targeted areas have been achieved;
• Provide VSF Belgium and donors with information on how the program interventions have contributed to livelihood security of the targeted households;
• Inform future design of similar interventions by VSFB and provide the staff with a learning opportunity.
The evaluation will focus on the operational approach, the implementation process and the performance of the programme.
Specifically the evaluation must give answers to the following questions:
• Did expected results fulfill the needs identified prior to the intervention? (relevance)

VSF-Belgium is officially registered as an NGO with the Belgian Government and operates in several African Countries.
One of VSFB’s approaches to development is to work in partnership with other development organizations.
For this reason, VSFB aspires to build partnerships that are inclusive, accountable, empowering, and based on relationships of openness, respect, and mutual trust for the achievement of the organizational strategic objectives.
It is in line with this that VSFB has been implementing projects in Moroto, Uganda jointly with Matheniko Development Forum (MADEFO) for the last 3 years.
VSFB has received funding from the Government of Belgium to implement the Karamoja Livestock Development Project, which focuses on addressing the chronic livelihood emergency situation of pastoralists within the Karamoja region of Uganda.
One of the objectives of the above intervention is to build the capacity of local partner organizations that will gradually take over the roles of VSFB.
Matheniko Development Forum (MADEFO) was established in December 1998 as a local indigenous organization to work with Karimojong nomadic pastoralists and Agro-Pastoralists. MADEFO, registered with the National NGO Board in 2000, was formed as a response by the Karimojong civil society groups to the many pressing issues affecting the Karimojong.
Among the issues were: deepening poverty with declining human development rating, human rights violations as a result of violent armed conflicts, the devastating state of the environment and the high rate of illiteracy, and the extreme marginalization by past and current governments.
In September 2007, MADEFO received support from CORDAID to carry out a financial management self assessment and came up with a capacity development plan, but only limited to finance. VSFB therefore, wants to compliment CORDAID’s intervention by supporting a more holistic capacity assessment.
Justification
VSFB receives both public and private funding to support development initiatives in many countries in Africa. This therefore calls for ensuring that the capacities of partners are enhanced so that they deliver on set objectives for the following reasons:
Firstly, it enables enhanced performance and impact in society.
Secondly, the ongoing sustainability of those partners is likely to be enhanced and finally there has been an ever-increasing need for public accountability in the NGO sector.
Objective of the consultancy
VSFB, under KLDP, focuses on enhancing the capacity of local partner organizations, in this case Matheniko Development Forum (MADEFO). The objective of this consultancy is to carry out a facilitated Participatory Organizational Self Assessment for Matheniko Development Forum (MADEFO), the output of which will inform the capacity building plan.
It is expected that this consultancy will help identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and come up with tangible strategies of addressing the weaknesses and capitalizing on the strengths.
Location: The consultancy will be in Moroto office, Moroto District,, Karamoja Region of Uganda.
Timeframe
• The whole consultancy is expected to take 6 days: 1 day preparation in Moroto, 3 days in the field locations (Moroto), 2 days final reporting.
• It should take place during the month of June 2010.
• The final report should be available by 10th July 2010 at the latest.
Key Activities
• Prepare a detailed work plan for the consultancy which outlines the methodology to be used and present to the VSFB Regional Technical Advisor for approval.
• Review existing related literature and interviews with key stakeholders
• Present at the end of the fieldwork preliminary findings in each area, to the project team and other
